We highly recommend avoiding the use of other (specify) questions in grid/matrix display.
Typically, surveys only receive a few responses to these types of ‘other’ (please specify) questions and asking a respondent provide a rating for an open-ended question creates respondent burden with little to no actionable value.
The ratings for these values are typically not reported as too few identical answers to an open-ended question ever occur.
Instead, if the objective is to include an ‘other’ catch-all qualitative question to determine if other response options should exist in future surveys or to determine if responses of high frequency are missing, we recommend adding a separate qualitative question (not in a grid format for quantitative rating).
