Should we class Hyflex courses as Blended in the UNICON Membership Benchmarking Survey?

Support inquiry: UNICON Membership Benchmarking Survey Question P2A1 - Face to face, Fully online and Blended. We offer Face-to-face, Fully Online and Hyflex programmes. I have classed Hyflex as Blended for the purposes of the survey as if I were to split them into their Face-To-Face and Fully Online modes I would be double reporting. Is this the correct approach?

For purposes of the UNICON Membership Benchmarking Survey, Hybrid and Hyflex learning courses should be included in the overall Blended category. The F2F and Fully Online modes of Hyflex courses should be included in the Blended category for P2A1.

We consider these definitions of learning formats:

Hybrid - Learners are required to attend both an in-class session typically once a week and complete the remainder of their coursework online. Learners may or may not be required to attend additional class sessions, or participate in activities like discussion boards, virtually as part of class attendance.

Hyflex - Learners have flexibility regarding how they want to participate in the course including in-class sessions, online synchronous sessions, and asynchronous online. Learners can select different options throughout the course term. Instructors may or may not require prior approval or notification of how a learner plans to attend each session. Instructors prepare for both in-class and online instruction for the learning term.

Blended - Blended learning (also known as hybrid learning) is a method of teaching that integrates technology and digital media with traditional instructor-led classroom activities, giving students more flexibility to customize their learning experiences. The possibilities are endless when it comes to the ways in which instructional technologies can be blended into a pedagogical approach. In general, blended learning refers to the following:

  1. Some learning happens online in a format where the student has control over the path and pace at which they engage with content
  2. Some learning happens in an instructor-led classroom
  3. Online and in-person learning is complementary, creating a truly integrated learning environment
